Florida Power & Light planning to build the state's first new nuclear-power plants since the 1980s. Each plant will cost billions of dollars, with customers being asked to start paying for them in 2009.
· 2009 costs:
FPL wants to collect $221 million from customers next year to pay for the initial phases of the project and to help upgrade already-existing nuclear plants. That would add $2.13 a month to the bills of residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
This is an ADDITION to normal rate increases each year.
